is driven by trying to inject fear into the culture. it's all fear based. >> and -- >> i thought mark kelly was the best of all. >> we're going to show all this because there was such powerful testimony on capitol hill. >> did you see it? >> it was great. i got a big laugh out of wayne lapierre. he actually trotted out the survivalist argument. >> i know. i saw it. we're going to show it. >> we might have a hurricane, and then it's going to be like stephen king, zombies. you know, you get three shots into a zombie, seriously. did anybody read "the road"? did anybody read "the road"? has nobody seen "the book of eli"? has nobody seen "the book of eli," really? that gary oldman character, he's scary. and if you just have a glock -- >> okay. >> you won't see a bible. >> no, you are cooked. a street sweeper. >> i need my bushmaster because the zombies are coming after me. there's going to be a tornado. the power grid's going down. locusts are going to descend from heaven. is glenn beck still selling survival seats, willie geist? >> i didn't get the subscription when he went to the new network.

husband mark kelly, incredibly powerful as well particularly in the moment that he smacked down wayne lapierre. it really is almost stunning what he said right? the whole exchange with dick durbin about what is the point of background checks. dick durbin is like that's the point you moron. >> yeah, and the other important point that i think rebuts that is that we have had now the brady system up and running since the late '90s, and actually 1.5 million gun transactions have been blocked because of the system that is in place, which, again, is a very spotty system in terms of mental health records and states that don't really do a good job of keeping their criminal record but even with those handicaps it still works, and the notion that it just doesn't work -- this is one of the nra talking points. it's just fact rally false, and -- and again obviously, durbin's point that it's a deterrence to people to guy guns is also the obvious counter to that claim. but i come from a more rural part of connecticut, and obviously there are a lot of gun owners out here. backgrou

forted by the chairman, chuck grassley, and her husband, mark kelly. she was asked to give the very first words at the hearing before anybody else spoke. she did so only 72 words, very moving powerful and halting speech, because she still has a long way to go with her recovery. >> violence is a big problem. too many children are dying. too many children. we must do something. >> bill: it was all carefully laid out. she had obviously rehearsed it and it really does sound like a first grader right? reading aloud in the class. >> yeah, she had to relearn how to speak. >> bill: she looked these senator right in the eye and said, you know look we need you. >> you must act. be bold, be courageous. americans are counting on you. >> bill: seventy-two words every one counted for sure. then the chairman opened with his statement calling on everybody to be open-minded. try to come to some solution the high road, patrick leahy took, and then chuck grassley got up and he lit into a big attack on president obama, and then he went after -- after the idea that we should do anyt

contest. >> let me ask you real quick, gabrielle giffords' husband, mark kelly, the astronaut, was here in "the situation room" yesterday and wolf spoke with him and asked him to speak directly to the camera, to the nra. listen to what he said. >> well, we've had many, many mass murders in this country. i mean, we've had a lot of them, you know, especially recently. what we saw in newtown, in colorado, and in tucson, this is unacceptable. i think people understand that when somebody does a mass shooting and they use a semi-automatic weapon, an assault rifle, twice as many people are hurt and injured. >> i want to get your response to that, but also in the context of, you were in the hearing room yesterday, when gabrielle giffords gave that very emotional opening statement. you heard her speak. so what do you say to her and her husband. they're both gun rights owners, they both support the second amendment, but they've also both faced this horrible tragedy and they want to see more stricter gun laws. >> well, i think the stricter gun laws sort of generically, is not the answer. but i wil

bash is joining us. you had had a chance to speak with mark kelly, the husband of gabrielle giffords. he's getting ready to testify tomorrow. what did he say to you? >> reporter: that's right. i spoke with him by phone a short while ago. he said that he and gabby giffords are both gun owners and that he actually thought about joining the nra but never got around to it. when it comes to wayne la peaier, the two have never met but he hopes that they can have a constructive conversation about how to tackle gun violence. two staunch supporters of the second amendment, two very different views on guns. >> they are god given freedoms. they belong to us in the united states of america as our birth right. no government gave them to us and no government can ever take them away. >> i defended the second amendment flying in combat over iraq in kuwait, you know, defending our country. i own a gun. this really isn't about the second amendment. >> reporter: these will be the star witnesses at congresses' first hearing since the shooting in newtown. mark kelly, the husband of gabby giffords who was

and frustration drove gabby giffords and husband, mark kelly, back to capitol hill wednesday two years after the shooting that nearly took her life and did take much of her eyesight and ability to spea speak. >> we must do something. >> reporter: working from her speech therapists handwritten notes, giffords pushed herself to deliver her handwritten message. >> you must act. be bold, be courageous. >> reporter: but a different message from the head of the national rifle association. wayne lapierre who rejected democrats proposal to inject background checks at gun shows and gun sales. >> we have to look at what works and never works. my problem with background checks, you will never get criminals to go through universal background checks. >> that was the first hearing related to guns since newtown. others are planned like mental health issues and dealing with violence in video games. senate democrats will have to lead the charge on this and say they expect to have some kind of bill written to get it going over the next month. >> kelly o'donnell in washington, what i'm sure will be an emotiona
